Learn the basics of flowers-on-tulle embroidery in this full-day workshop and make your own “typography hoop” – a letter of your choice in a 14” wooden embroidery hoop that makes a wonderful wall hanging or present for a birthday, wedding or christening.

You’ll learn how to stretch and secure the tulle fabric in the embroidery hoop, prepare the stems of the dried flowers, and methods of attaching flowers to the fabric as well as creating complex flower shapes and branching structures within your letterform. We will have a tour of the Walled Garden and see if there’s anything we can collect to include in our designs. Olga will demonstrate how to dry fresh flowers if you have a garden at home and would like to experiment further with flowers-on-tulle embroidery.

Olga will explain how to stitch a letter template onto the fabric using metallic thread, and the best way of distributing the various flowers within the letter shape to achieve a balanced design.

All tools and materials will be provided including a large selection of suitable dried flowers, tulle fabric and metallic thread – all in a choice of colours – so you can make your design unique to you.

Participants will be asked to choose which letter they will create before the day, so Olga can come prepared with the right letter templates. (The flower selection may vary slightly from those shown in the images depending on availability at the time).

You will get advice on options for framing and display. No prior stitching or embroidery knowledge needed.

This workshop is partially funded through our Residency Programme. If you would like to attend but costs would be a barrier, please contact emma@hugoburgefoundation.org for information about funded spots.

The type and flowers can combine to create a language of their own, a kind of nature’s poetry.
