We are looking for a visual artist to join us from 21st October to 18th November.
As this residency takes place at a time when our landscape in the Scottish Borders puts on a wonderful last display of autumnal vibrancy before a season of wintering and hibernation, we want to invite a resident who is eager to explore the concept of "hidden people or things." Whether its stepping back from the world for a period of rest and reflection or concealment for the sake of survival, what disappears from our life and what do we make efforts to keep in the light?
Ways to explore this theme include but are not limited to:
The oscillation between visibility and concealment
Power and/or safety as well as the lack there of in concealment
Hidden histories or stories
Explorations on what is displayed versus what is hidden away
Obscurity and its effect on understanding
Hibernation/slumber/dormancy with or without the promise of return to activity
This is a fully funded residency that includes exclusive studio space, accommodation in one of our Hobbit Pods, and a weekly stipend of £350.
There are no expectations about what you will use the residency for but we would expect the selected artist to conduct at least one public event such as a creative workshop (for adult participants), a talk, demonstration, performance or educational activity.
You will be able to spend time with other visual artists and makers on site, along with another visiting artist also on residency. Our Creative Director, Dr James Fox will provide mentorship during your stay.
Deadline to apply is August 2nd.
The Marchmont Estate is situated in a rural area with very little public transport. A car is recommended during your stay but is not essential.
All bed linens and towels are provided
Accommodation is fully self catering
Groceries can be delivered to the Estate by supermarkets in Berwick Upon Tweed
If you know of someone who would be suitable for this opportunity, please share this page with them. Or you may post this page on social media, using the buttons below, thank you.
All residency-holders are accommodated in one of our two modern hobbit pods, situated in a meadow near the courtyard on the Marchmont Estate. These warm, bright spaces both have double beds (the larger pod also has an additional bedroom), bathrooms, open-plan kitchens, writing desks, sofas and south-facing decks with wonderful views of the Cheviot Hills.
It was such a pleasure to have been welcomed and inspired by such a lovely and creative community. What amazing people, trees, books, food, art, chairs, roofs, dogs & geese!
Please complete the form below by letting us know what you would hope to achieve as a result of your residency with The Hugo Burge Foundation. It is helpful if you also upload your CV or artist statement and some examples of your work.
Applications are now closed, please see our Residencies
