Drawing is a most basic and foundational activity, which has existed since prehistory. Drawing connects our internal thinking with external reality. Drawing allows us to examine our understanding of the world without the limits of language. Drawings communicate with other people and ourselves in subtle and unique ways.
In this course we’ll be playing with pastels, (soft pastels and oil pastels), pastel pencils, and learning to connect with nature and the past. We'll be beginning to see the world as simple forms and exploring the natural world, making studies and exploring techniques such as mark making, tone, shape, form, texture and composition to record and celebrate life.
Drawing develops skills like observation, concentration and can be absorbing and relaxing, as well as encouraging mindfulness and developing self-confidence through this practical activity.
Students will develop confidence in their drawing while making observational sketches, to record information as well as working intuitively and experimentally.
There will be a tutor talk and demonstration of drawing materials and methods. Student practice - students will have the opportunity to try out methods and share their work. There’ll be lots of 1:1 tutor advice.
Beginners are welcome.
Suggested materials for students
Soft pastels, oil pastels, pastel pencils.
Good quality cartridge paper and/or watercolour paper. Plus some coloured paper.
Materials will be provided
Messy clothes or apron might also be useful
About the Facilitator
These classes are led by Scottish Borders based artist Christopher Kent who studied at Bath, Sunderland and Newcastle. He has exhibited his work across the UK, in Europe and USA, in group as well as solo exhibitions(including the Royal Scottish Academy).
He was selected for the Sky Portrait Artist of the Year 2016.He has written and published 3 graphic novels.As well as painting and drawing, his practice has also included wood sculpture and has worked on a range of private and public commissions, including for Marie Curie and the National Trust. His work is held in a variety of national collections, (including the City Art Centre, Edinburgh. His work also includes performance, which he has written and performed - ‘Compulsion’ (about Orson Welles), and ‘The Phantom’(about Edgar Allan Poe).
Christopher has run a range of workshops and classes over the years - from drawing, woodcarving and wood sculpture to acrylics, watercolours and egg tempera painting.
