About the Garden - Placeholder
Section 1: Our Philosophy
The garden is the heartbeat of the Hugo Burge Foundation. Inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement’s deep reverence for nature, our walled garden serves as a living canvas. We believe that a nurtured landscape fosters a nurtured mind, providing the peace and inspiration necessary for artists and makers to push the boundaries of their craft.
Section 2: A Living Resource for Artists
The garden at Marchmont is more than a scenic backdrop; it is a functional resource for our creative community:
Natural Materials: A source of organic dyes, willow for weaving, and botanical subjects for painters and illustrators.
The Creative Retreat: Quiet corners designed for reflection, writing, and sketching.
Sculpture & Form: The garden acts as an outdoor gallery, where the permanent collection meets the changing seasons.
Section 3: Restoration & Sustainability
We are committed to the sensitive restoration of this historic space. By employing sustainable horticultural practices, we aim to increase local biodiversity, providing a haven for pollinators and native wildlife within the Scottish Borders.
Kitchen Garden: Growing seasonal produce that sustains our residents and visitors.
The Orchard: Preserving heritage varieties that connect the present landscape to its past.
Section 4: Visit & Engage
While the garden serves as a private sanctuary for our resident artists, we frequently open the gates for:
Special Open Days: Guided tours focused on both horticulture and the sculptures within the grounds.
Workshops: Outdoor learning sessions ranging from botanical drawing to sustainable gardening.
