The philosophy for the garden is to passionately manage and maintain it as a unique source of creative inspiration for all and develop its identity and function within the local and wider community. This will be achieved through our values of Sustainability, Ecology, Social impact, Education, Enjoyment and Creativity

At the heart of the Hugo Burge Foundation, the garden serves to inspire visitors and resident artists in an environment that nurtures creativity. This is done by providing natural materials to be used in creative processes, through displaying artworks in a harmonious way throughout the garden or by simply providing a space for contemplation.

As custodians of a walled garden that has evolved over the last 200 years, we are looking to manage and maintain the gardens for future generations. This is done through the conservation of historic garden features such as the Mackenzie and Moncur glasshouses or through documenting the gardens past and present by creating a detailed timeline of the garden’s history. However, although we recognise the importance of the garden’s history, it doesn’t necessarily dictate how we manage it for the future.

“Do today with tomorrow in mind”
Working in harmony with nature is central to how we manage the garden. We favour natural and sustainable materials where possible, use biological controls, and minimise the use of chemicals. We choose planting schemes which benefit a wide range of wildlife.

Although the gardens are not open to the public daily, it is our aim to engage through open days, workshops, tours and other events. We currently open the garden once a week in summer through Scotland’s Garden Scheme. We also welcome visitors to join one of our public tours and offer a range of options for private bookings from groups and societies. Creative Workshops range from painting, writing and illustrating to botanical art and practical horticulture.
