A day in our Glasshouses and Walled Garden exploring and creating botanical poetry with publisher Boom Saloon.
1 PM - 3 PM
boom saloon, an independent publisher dedicated to democratising creativity for good, will be in the HBF Glasshouses presenting a unique opportunity to come together to learn the process of erasure poetry at this 2 hour workshop.
Working with existing texts, erasure poetry is created by blacking out words from existing texts to form new sentences, poems and stories from what remains. It allows us to play with words without the pressure of having to think of them from scratch. Instead, we can enjoy restructuring and playing with words which already exist to tell our own stories and create new works from our most loved pieces of literature, making it an easy introduction to poetry and creative writing.
Participants can bring their favourite piece of literature about botanics, gardens, or nature as a launching pad to create a new piece of exploring green spaces together.
boom saloon creates these workshops drawing from their work to rewrite the story of dementia as well as their many years’ worth of experience in delivering engaging literature focussed workshops.
Join us, along with your favourite piece of literature, as we teach you the exciting new skill of erasure poetry and work together to unleash your inner literary giant, regardless of experience or level.
boom saloon will be back on April 30th hosting a botanical zine-making workshop, if you would like to book both workshops together.
If you would like to attend but find cost to be a barrier, please email emma@hugoburgefoundation.org.
About boom saloon
boom saloon is an independent publisher dedicated to democratising creativity for good. We publish books and magazines, both in-house and for clients, which explore the connection between the arts and social change. Profits from these fund further publications, made in collaboration with people facing complex personal challenges such as substance abuse, homelessness, forcible displacement and dementia. Building upon the concept of Asset Based Community Development, we begin by identifying creative talents who could benefit from the nourishment and support of their skills. Working in collaboration, together we create books and magazines to amplify these voices. Our work often addresses issues which should be better supported by the state, yet we receive no continuous public funds or state aid. Our work is powered by an international collective of members, who enjoy a series of discounts and events in thanks for their support. Most importantly, they make it possible for us to publish voices too often silenced and use paper and ink as a circular model for change.
