Painting the Garden - Acrylics (Part 2)

A relaxing introductory course for Acrylic Painting on canvas in our gardens for beginners and those with a little more experience.

We will be learning more about this versatile water-based painting material [working on paper] and developing some more creative and practical skills. Led by artist Christopher Kent,

Students will gain confidence working with acrylic paints using various techniques. We will practice and experiment by suggesting texture, shape, form, value/tone, depth/atmospheric perspective, with awareness for mark making and composition. We will be looking out for aspects of the gardens that inspire us.

We will practise colour mixing and explore  techniques including glazing and layering.

There will be a tutor talk and/or demonstration of drawing materials and methods. Students will have the opportunity to try out methods and share their work There’ll be lots of 1:1 tutor advice.

Beginners are welcome

Suggested materials for students:

Charcoal, some pencils, a rubber

Good quality cartridge paper or multi-media paper

A simple set of acrylic paints in tubes: eg. Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, White, Burnt Umber

And a few synthetic paint brushes

Clothes that are suitable to get messy or an apron

Please bring a packed lunch.

About the Facilitator

These classes are led by Scottish Borders based artist Christopher Kent who studied at Bath, Sunderland and Newcastle. He has exhibited his work across the UK, in Europe and USA, in group as well as solo exhibitions(including the Royal Scottish Academy).

He was selected for the Sky Portrait Artist of the Year 2016.He has written and published 3 graphic novels.As well as painting and drawing, his practice has also included wood sculpture and has worked on a range of private and public commissions, including for Marie Curie and the National Trust. His work is held in a variety of national collections, (including the City Art Centre, Edinburgh. His work also includes performance, which he has written and performed - ‘Compulsion’ (about Orson Welles), and ‘The Phantom’(about Edgar Allan Poe).
Christopher has run a range of workshops and classes over the years - from drawing, woodcarving and wood sculpture to acrylics, watercolours and egg tempera painting.
