Zine Making - Spring Equinox

A day in our Glasshouses and Walled Garden exploring and creating zine making and the spring equinox with publisher Boom Saloon.

-
April 30, 2026

1 PM - 3 PM

boom saloon, an independent publisher dedicated to democratising creativity for good, will be in the HBF Glasshouses presenting this engaging 2 hour workshop, covering the history of zine making before getting hands-on and teaching you how to create your own, with a distinctly botanical twist.

Working with a variety of different materials, and drawing reference from HBF's exquisite Walled Garden, we’ll share information on the most popular forms of zine before walking you through how to make your own, inspired by the spring equinox and the beckoning of the new season.

Through cutting, sticking, writing and tearing, you’ll learn the skills required to use the power of the printed page to share your message in a fast, accessible way.

Join us to enjoy spending time together in nature as you learn this new skill and work with us to unleash your inner zine publisher.

This workshop is open to all. If you would like to attend but find cost to be a barrier, please email emma@hugoburgefoundation.org.

boom saloon is also with us on April 9th hosting an erasure poetry workshop. You can book the workshops together here.

About boom saloon

boom saloon is an independent publisher dedicated to democratising creativity for good. We publish books and magazines, both in-house and for clients, which explore the connection between the arts and social change. Profits from these fund further publications, made in collaboration with people facing complex personal challenges such as substance abuse, homelessness, forcible displacement and dementia. Building upon the concept of Asset Based Community Development, we begin by identifying creative talents who could benefit from the nourishment and support of their skills. Working in collaboration, together we create books and magazines to amplify these voices. Our work often addresses issues which should be better supported by the state, yet we receive no continuous public funds or state aid. Our work is powered by an international collective of members, who enjoy a series of discounts and events in thanks for their support. Most importantly, they make it possible for us to publish voices too often silenced and use paper and ink as a circular model for change.
